I assume pretty much everyone out there that has any interest in video games has heard of League of Legends by now, but for anyone that may have heard the name, but doesn’t really know anything about it keep reading.
League of Legends is one of the most popular video games in the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) genre. In fact, it’s one of the most popular games in any genre right now. For anyone not familiar with how this style of game works, you start with two teams of either 5 or 3 players depending on the map. You start the game by picking a champion role that you want to play, there are well over 100 of them now to choose from, each with a different set of abilities. The goal is to fight your way to the other team’s base and destroy it. It sounds like a simple enough idea, but against a good team it’s quite challenging. You earn money in game by killing the opponent team’s players, or other jungle critters that are scattered around the map. Different critters can provide different ‘buffs’ that last for a short while that can help you out in the game.
There are basically two phases to each game. The first is a laning phase that can be a bit boring, because it’s mostly both teams just trying to earn more money than the other team to be able to buy better items at the shop to defeat the enemy. The second part is the part that gets real fun, it’s the part where most of the big battles happen. The outcome of these team fights can determine who wins and who loses a game in seconds.
It can be quite a fun game to play with friends also, if you have four friends that you can make a team with, get together with them sometime and give it a try. It’s fun to play solo, but as a group it just adds that much more action to it.
The best part, it is free. It doesn’t cost anything to play the basic game, like many games out now, there are things you can buy with ‘RP’ that do cost money, but those things have very little effect on how well you do in a game. You can’t “buy your way” to being good just by throwing a lot of money at the game.
If you give it a try, if you have never played a similar game make sure to start with the tutorial. It was quite a bit different than anything I had ever played before when I first tried. I skipped the tutorial and had no idea what I was doing.
